What happens when a Pakistani spy who has inveigled his way into the Counter-Terrorism Service in India as an Indian officer, Bilal (Ayushmann Khurrana), is told by his superior, M.D. Burman (Rahul Bose), that he must become a Dhurandhar across the border? There is another mole, Dhruv (Suhail Nayyar), on our espionage team who is also a Pakistani agent (he is actually Ashfaq), and Burman wants to find out who the rotten apple is in the service.

Bilal lives with his Indian wife, Yamini (Sara Ali Khan), but they are on the verge of divorce, and her mother (Supriya Pilgaonkar). Their household servant, Tahir (Touseef Gazi), is also a Pak agent.

Back in Pakistan, Gen. Mir (Gulshan Grover) feels that his right-hand, Niazi (Ram Kapoor), the man who Bilal considers his ‘Chachu,’ can be promoted. Niazi, who handles the ISI agenda, is in regular touch with his reliable team of Bilal and Ashfaq, planning terrorist moves in Mumbai and fishing out information from the Counter-Terrorism Service. During a mission, Burman comes to know that the two are enemy agents, and a scuffle ensues in the car. Ashfaq is thrown out, and the car overturns. Bilal recovers from a coma after a few days, but with post-traumatic amnesia, and Burman gets into a vegetative state where he can see, hear, and understand everything but cannot speak or move.

When his colleagues visit him in the hospital, Bilal is told that he is actually Vikrant, his Indian identity. He vows to defeat our nasty neighboring country’s actions. Niazi, Ashfaq (who is his childhood buddy and support system after his parents were killed), and Tahir are befuddled. When will Bilal remember who he actually is? Things get worse when a determined Bilal cracks down on Pakistani spies. And meanwhile, to Yamini’s mother’s delight, the couple are back in love.

What (all) happens next? Now, that’s what the viewer would want to watch!

Udta Teer Movie Review: Script Analysis

Suffice it to say that Akash A. Kaushik, the man who co-wrote F.A.L.T.U., Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2, and Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3, keeps everything wholesome. The film avoids unpalatable degrees of violence and, on the other hand, brings in humor to even the hospital sequences of M.D. Burman, his chief officer Holkar (Smita Tambe), and Ashfaq. There is also a comic edge given to terrorist Azhar Maqsood (the late Mukul Dev) in Niazi’s frustration at the negative (for him) news coming in from India, always when he is having a meal served by his servant. The sequences showing Indian officer K.K. Srivastav’s licentiousness in the party as well as in the car with the song from Julie are also humorous.

The viewers will not only be gratified but will also find the Bilal-Tahir visits to the temple hilarious in context, especially during the Ram Mandir festivities. All in all, the film is supremely entertaining, but above all, the script is very intelligent in its complex structure.

A nitpick: one of the Pakistani officers uses the purely Hindi word ‘chinta’ (worry) instead of the correct Urdu word ‘fikr’. Nitpick number two: There was really no need for a Vikrant-Yamini duet that comes suddenly midway. Also, we are not told until late in the film that Yamini is a working woman and not a mere homemaker.

On the other hand, I loved the name M.D. Burman. It’s so wacky as a non-musical tribute to Pancham!

Udta Teer Movie Review: Star Performance

Ayushmann Khurrana enters the spy genre with a flourish and keeps his performance correctly restrained and understated. He is utterly natural as both Bilal and Vikrant and is excellent in his sequences with Ashfaq and Tahir. Suhail Nayyar is spot-on as Ashfaq and is outstanding in his hospital scenes with Burman. Taufeeq Qazi did remarkable small roles earlier, and he is superb as Tahir. He reminded me of Rajpal Yadav, who has portrayed similar helpless characters. His suggestion to Ashfaq (no spoilers here!) about their lifestyle is hilarious.

Ram Kapoor subtly underplays Niazi instead of making him loud and caricatural. But I especially loved Smita Tambe as Holkar, the late Mukul Dev as Azhar Maqsood, and Kavya Kumar in his cameo as Sharif. All three are fantastic.

Gulshan Grover, Shriya Pilgaonkar, and Brijendra Kala are competent. Sara Ali Khan has a superficial role and provides the glam quotient more than anything else.

Udta Teer Movie Review: Direction, Music

Akash A. Kaushik is clearly a director of promise. This film goes far beyond earlier anti-terrorist comedies that were disastrous in both the fun genre and patriotic ventures. Kaushik cashes in not only on the strong anti-enemy mood of the times, but also on his script and direction, which are so complementary that the structuring and twists are impeccable.

The background score by Ketan Sodha is effective and wacky when needed. The use of the older songs (a Karan Johar tradition) is well done, especially the background refrain from Khal-Nayak, composed by Laxmikant-Pyarelal, and the original Rajesh Roshan-composed Julie title track. The songs from older Dharma movies scored by Jatin-Lalit and Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy come in at apt junctures as well.

From the songs composed by Sachin-Jigar, Bhootni ke and Jai Hind stand out, though Choozay also works audio-visually. A pat is in order for music supervisors Azeem Dayani and Tanvi Asher.

Udta Teer Movie Review: The Last Word

If you are an arrow seeking a refreshingly different patriotic film, Udta Teer is the right target. It needs better promotion, as it has been released in a week with multiple releases, so hopefully the Dharma-Ayushmann combination can give it a sufficient edge at the box office to get the vital word-of-mouth.

Four stars!
