Her fights this time are more like quieter takedowns, or moments where someone else steps in. That edge of “I’ll do what it takes” never fully shows up. Her emotions hit at times, but her purpose wavers. The drive just wasn’t steady.
Dina and Jessie picked up the slack a lot. Ellie followed, reacted, or leaned on them to move forward. When Dina dropped the pregnancy news, Ellie cracked a joke instead of showing any fear, doubt, or weight. That emotional drop-off made some scenes feel light when they needed to land hard.

With Season 3 pivoting to Abby’s story, the balance could feel off. In the game, Ellie and Abby reflect each other — one drowning in revenge, the other finding peace. But if Ellie’s spiral doesn’t fully play out, that mirror might crack.
So far, HBO hasn’t spilled anything about how they’ll shape Season 3. But with Ellie’s arc feeling cut short, and Abby’s side coming next, it could be tricky to pull off that emotional payoff fans were hoping for.
